Expert Guide to Pre-Service Preparation and Post-Service Care for Aeration, Fertilization, and Mulching

  • One of the smartest investments you can make for your property in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Springfield, Annandale, or Fairfax is keeping your soil nourished and protected. However, the success of a Mulching, Aeration & Fertilization treatment depends not only on professional execution, but also on how you prepare your lawn beforehand and the care you apply afterward.

    1. Pre-Service Best Practices (Before We Arrive)
Mark hidden underground elements: If you have pop-up sprinkler systems, low-voltage landscape lighting, or invisible pet fences, clearly flag or stake them. This prevents accidental damage during mechanical aeration.

Clear toys, stones, and obstacles: Clear the lawn and flower beds of hoses, mobile planters, children’s toys, and large stones to allow our equipment to work smoothly and evenly.

Water moderately the day before: If the soil is completely dry and hardened by drought, the aerator will struggle to penetrate properly. A light watering 24 hours prior helps the cores (soil plugs) pull out clean and deep.

    2. Post-Service Best Practices (After Our Work)
Leave the soil plugs in place: After aeration, you will see small soil cylinders on your lawn. Do not remove or rake them away. These will naturally break down in a few days, returning valuable microorganisms and essential nutrients directly to the root zone.

Follow the watering schedule: Fertilization and aeration open channels for water to penetrate deeper, but your turf will still need consistent moisture (approximately 1 inch of water per week, combined from rain and irrigation) to maximize nutrient uptake.

Protect the mulch layers: Keep heavy foot traffic off newly installed mulch beds for the first 2 to 3 days to allow the material to settle naturally while maintaining its pristine aesthetics and moisture retention.
